Elbas

Elbas is the Swedish word for the electric bass, the bass guitar designed to be amplified rather than heard acoustically. The entry catalogues an instrument of that kind in the collections of the Swedish Museum of Performing Arts. The electric bass appeared in the early 1950s as a fretted, four-string instrument with a solid body and magnetic pickups, and it replaced the double bass in most popular music because it was easier to carry, easier to amplify and more consistent in pitch. Instruments of this type are usually solid-bodied with a bolt-on neck, one or two pickups and a simple volume and tone control.
