Guitarrón mexicano
The guitarrón mexicano is the large acoustic bass instrument of Mexican mariachi ensembles. It has a deep, rounded body with a convex back, a short neck with a wide, unfretted or lightly fretted fingerboard and a set of six strings fitted with two courses of paired strings at the lower end, and it is played by plucking heavily with the thumb and fingers, which produces a loud, percussive and full bass sound with a strong attack. The instrument supplies the bass line and the rhythmic foundation of the mariachi group, and it is a folk instrument of Mexico rather than a factory product.
