MPU-401

The Roland MPU-401 is a MIDI processing unit introduced in the middle of the 1980s, and it became the standard way of connecting computers to MIDI instruments. It takes MIDI data and passes it between a personal computer and synthesizers, drum machines or other devices, with options for synchronising the timing of the connected equipment, and its arrangement of a host interface card and an external break-out box was copied or emulated by many other manufacturers. It was central to the computer music studio of the period, and its protocol remains supported in MIDI software.
