Red Special
The Red Special is the electric guitar the British guitarist Brian May of Queen designed and built as a teenager with his father. It was made at home from materials to hand, with a body of oak and blockboard, a neck cut and fretted by hand, and three pickups of a type no longer made, which are wired with individual phase switches and in-series options to give a wide range of voices not available on standard guitars. Its short scale length and the arrangements of its controls shape the player's distinctive tone, and it has been closely copied in several commercial models.
