Channel strip

A single device or software module that combines a microphone preamp with equalisation, compression and often other processing for one input.

The channel strip descends directly from the input module of a large analogue console, where every channel carried the same sequence of gain, filtering, equalisation, dynamics and routing. Having the whole chain in one place makes signal flow easy to follow and encourages committing to a sound at the point of recording rather than fixing it later. Hardware versions are prized for their preamps, and software versions for convenience and recall.

Example: A rack unit that provides gain, an EQ section and a compressor for one microphone is a channel strip.
