Closed-back cabinet

A speaker cabinet that is fully sealed, so the rear wave cannot escape and the cone is loaded by the trapped air inside.

Sealing the cabinet forces the cone to work against the air inside it, which raises the low-frequency output and gives a tight, focused, punchy sound that projects in a narrow beam. The cost is that the sound does not spread round a stage as widely, so players using closed-back cabinets often find they are heard best directly in front of them. Sealed 4x12 cabinets with high-power speakers define the modern high-gain sound for exactly these reasons.

Example: A large rectangular cabinet with a solid back, used under a high-gain amplifier head, is a closed-back cabinet.
