Open-back cabinet

A speaker cabinet whose rear panel is missing or partly open, letting sound from the back of the cones escape and mix with the front.

An open back lets the rear sound wave wrap around the cabinet, which widens the dispersion and fills a room with a softer, more three-dimensional sound. It also reduces the bass because the rear wave partially cancels the front wave at low frequencies, giving the famous loose low end of classic combo amplifiers. Open-backed cabinets are usually preferred for clean and mid-gain playing, where the airy spread matters more than a tight, punchy bottom.

Example: A combo amplifier whose back panel is a partial board rather than solid is an open-back cabinet.
