Impulse response
A recording of how a system responds to a very short input, used to capture the acoustic behaviour of cabinets, microphones and rooms.
Because a linear system is fully described by its response to a click, the file serves as a fingerprint that can be applied to any other signal by convolution. In guitar equipment the term usually means a cabinet or microphone capture, and the length of the file decides how much detail, especially low frequency, is preserved. Realistic results depend on capturing the system at the level and distance intended.
Example: swapping one impulse response file for another in the same rig changes the guitar's perceived speaker and microphone completely, with no other setting touched.
