Profiling
A technique that captures the measured behaviour of a specific amplifier, cabinet or pedal and stores it as a playable digital model.
The unit sends test signals through the real equipment and records how it responds across many settings, then uses that data to reproduce the sound rather than simulating the circuit. Because the capture is of one particular specimen, its quirks come with it, which is the appeal: a player can carry a profile of their own amp and hear it through headphones. The approach is most convincing on the aspects that can be measured, with some debate about how well it reproduces the feel of a valve amplifier reacting to playing.
Example: a session player can profile a rented vintage amplifier once and use its sound on later recordings without hiring it again.
