Series effects loop

An effects loop in which the whole signal leaving the preamp passes through the external effects chain before returning.

A series loop breaks the amplifier between preamp and power amp and sends everything through the pedals, so the effects are heard in full and in order. It is the simpler and more common arrangement, and it works well with delays and reverbs where a wet and dry blend is not needed. The drawback is that any noisy or tone-colouring pedal is now permanently in the signal path, and a failure in the chain takes the whole amplifier down with it.

Example: A delay pedal connected so that the amplifier's preamp output goes through it and back into the power amp is in a series effects loop.
