My Guitar Notes

Electro-Spanish Ken Roberts

The Electro-Spanish Ken Roberts is an early electric guitar made by the Rickenbacker company, then known as Rickenbacher, in the 1930s. An electric Spanish guitar was one held and played in the conventional upright way rather than laid flat like a Hawaiian steel, which was still the norm for electrics at the time, so these instruments were a step towards the electric guitar as it is understood now. The Ken Roberts model was named for a performer of the period and followed the company's moulded Bakelite construction with an early magnetic pickup.
