Elgitarr
Elgitarr is the Swedish term for the electric guitar. The entry catalogues an instrument of that kind held in the collections of the Swedish Museum of Performing Arts. An electric guitar produces almost no sound of its own: its steel strings are sensed by magnetic pickups, and the resulting signal is amplified and voiced by whatever equipment the player chooses. That arrangement allowed the guitar to become a loud ensemble instrument, and it is the reason the electric guitar, usually a solid-bodied, six-string design with one to three pickups and a volume and tone control, came to dominate popular music.
