EMG 81

The EMG 81 is one of the most widely used active humbucking pickups in heavy music. It uses a ceramic magnet and an internal preamplifier powered by a nine-volt battery, giving a high output with strong compression, a tight, controlled low end and an aggressive midrange that cuts through a distorted amplifier. That clarity under heavy gain is the reason it became standard equipment in metal and hard rock guitars from the 1980s onwards, and the EMG 81 is normally paired with the EMG 85 or EMG 60 in the neck position. It is offered in several mounting formats and cover finishes.
