Fender Reverb Unit
The Fender Reverb Unit is a standalone spring reverb device Fender produced in the 1960s, designed to add reverb to amplifiers that lacked it. It contains a set of metal springs suspended in a frame: a signal is sent through the springs, and the reflections that travel along them are picked up and mixed back with the dry sound, giving the boinging, splashy ambience familiar from surf music. A Fender Reverb Unit placed in front of a small amplifier was a common way to obtain that sound, and reissues have since been made for players who want it.
