My Guitar Notes

Frankenstrat

The Frankenstrat is the guitar Eddie Van Halen assembled himself in the 1970s from parts of different origins: a Stratocaster-style body, a neck of a different make, and a humbucking pickup taken from a Gibson instrument and fitted directly into the wood without a mounting ring. He painted the body with a striking pattern of black and white stripes, and later added tape, a tremolo unit and further modifications over the years. The instrument's crude, effective construction and its distinctive sound made it one of the most imitated guitars in rock, and copies of it are sold widely.
