Gibson F-5

The Gibson F-5 is a mandolin design introduced in the early 1920s, developed under the direction of the engineer Lloyd Loar. It has a carved spruce top and carved maple back with f-holes, an arched and bound body, a scroll and two points on the outline, and a body shape that projects sound strongly while giving a bright, cutting tone with an even response across the register. It is regarded as one of the finest mandolin designs ever made, the original Loar-signed examples are extremely valuable, and Gibson has produced the model continuously in various forms.
