Gibson L-4

The Gibson L-4 is an archtop guitar with a carved top, part of the company's L series and produced from the early twentieth century in acoustic form and later as an electric instrument with a cutaway. It sits below the most elaborate archtops in the range in decoration while sharing their construction, and it was used by dance-band and jazz players who wanted a warm, projecting sound. The later electric version carries one or two pickups with the usual controls, and it is used for jazz and for styles where an amplified archtop tone is wanted.
