My Guitar Notes

Gibson L-1

The Gibson L-1 is an early flat-top acoustic guitar from the company's L series, made in various forms from the early twentieth century. It is a small-bodied instrument with a spruce top and mahogany or rosewood back and sides, a round or, on later versions, a slightly different body outline, and a short scale, and its compact size and dry, focused tone made it popular with blues and folk players. The model is associated particularly with the country blues tradition, and it has been reissued in honour of one of the musicians most closely linked with it.
