My Guitar Notes

Gibson Melody Maker

The Gibson Melody Maker is a solid-body student electric guitar introduced in 1959. The first version had a single-cutaway slab body with one pickup and a simple control layout, while a later version of the early 1960s used the symmetrical double-cutaway shape associated with the SG, offered with one or two pickups. Its plain construction and short scale made it cheap and easy to play, and its direct, wiry tone has given it a following out of proportion to its modest price, particularly among rock and blues players, and Gibson has reissued the model.
