My Guitar Notes

Gibson Moderne

The Gibson Moderne is the third instrument in the modernistic group of solid-body guitars the company developed in the late 1950s alongside the Explorer and the Flying V. Its body has an angular, offset outline with a long, straight-sided horn and a distinctive rear cut, and like its stablemates it was built in korina. The whole group sold badly in its time, and the Moderne is the rarest of all, with some question over whether instruments were made in the original period at all; the name has been reused on later reissues, which makes the history of the model a matter of continuing discussion.
