My Guitar Notes

Gibson RD

The Gibson RD is a series of electric guitars introduced in the late 1970s, with bodies of a large, angular outline unlike anything else the company was making. The range included standard and custom versions and the RD Artist, which was fitted with an elaborate active electronics package offering compression, expansion and a bright mode alongside the conventional controls, some versions of which were developed with the engineers who had designed Moog synthesizers. The instruments were heavy and relatively expensive, and they were produced for only a few years, making them a curiosity of Gibson's late 1970s range.
