My Guitar Notes

Gibson Tal Farlow

The Gibson Tal Farlow is an archtop electric guitar introduced in the early 1960s as a signature instrument for the American jazz guitarist Tal Farlow. It is built with a body slightly shallower than the standard archtop depth, which makes it more comfortable to hold and reduces its susceptibility to feedback, and it carries two humbucking pickups with separate volume and tone controls, a single cutaway and the usual bound construction with a dark sunburst finish. It is prized among jazz players for its balance between the acoustic voice of an archtop and the practicalities of amplified playing.
