Gitaar met 6 snaren en 17 frets, F. Breton, Mirecourt, ca. 1820
This entry records a six-string guitar with seventeen frets made by F. Breton of Mirecourt in about 1820. Mirecourt, in the Vosges region of France, was one of the centres of French instrument making, and its workshops supplied guitars and other stringed instruments across Europe in the early nineteenth century. A guitar of this period is a small, lightly built instrument with a narrow waist, a body shallower than later designs, a short neck with the frets set into the fingerboard and a bridge with a fixed saddle, and it was made for the domestic music of the time. The date and the maker come from the catalogue record for the instrument.
