My Guitar Notes

Gitaar voorzien van gekrulde kam. Duitsland, midden 19de eeuw

This entry records a guitar fitted with a curled or scroll-shaped comb, made in Germany in the middle of the nineteenth century. The comb of a guitar is the raised piece of wood or other material at the end where the strings are tied or anchored, and decorative variations of its shape were common in German and Austrian instrument making, where makers often worked elaborate motifs into otherwise plain instruments. Guitars of this period and place are small-bodied, lightly braced instruments with a short neck and a distinctive, delicate voice, made for domestic playing rather than for the concert hall.
