My Guitar Notes

Nano guitar

The Nano guitar is not a playable instrument but a microscopic sculpture about ten micrometres long, carved in silicon at the Cornell Nanofabrication Facility in 1997 by Dustin W. Carr, working under Professor Harold G. Craighead. It was made as a way of demonstrating the capabilities of nanotechnology to a general audience, reproducing the proportions of a guitar at a scale far too small to see without a microscope, with the strings formed by the same lithographic methods used to build electronic devices. The structure is not sounded by hand; its very high resonant frequencies were measured by optical means, so the device illustrates fabrication technique rather than music.
