HQ Software Synthesizer is a series of software synthesizers sold under the Edirol brand, the name Roland used for its computer music products. The software generates its sounds in the computer rather than in hardware, and it is played through a keyboard or other controller connected to the machine, with a set of instrument sounds and parameters edited on screen. Products of this kind represent the shift in the 1990s and 2000s from hardware tone generators towards software running on general-purpose computers, and the Edirol line was one of several such ranges Roland offered.
