The Yamaha YM2612, also known as OPN2, is a sound chip developed by Yamaha for use in computers, arcade boards and game consoles. It is a six-channel FM synthesis device, derived from the larger and more elaborate YM2608 chip, and it generates its sounds by frequency modulation rather than by playing sampled recordings, which gives it a distinctive bright, metallic voice that owners of the machines it powered remember well. It was used in a number of systems, most notably a widely owned home console of the late 1980s and early 1990s, and it was also produced in a modified form as the YM3438.
