Roland RE-201
The Roland RE-201 Space Echo is a tape delay unit introduced in the middle of the 1970s and one of the most admired effects ever made. It uses a moving loop of magnetic tape and a set of playback heads to produce its repeats, with a motor whose speed can be varied to set the delay time, and it adds reverb and a preamp to the same circuit. The tape gives each repeat a soft, slightly degraded character and a degree of instability that digital delays do not reproduce, and the resulting sound is heard on a great many records of the period; the unit has been reissued in both hardware and software form.
