My Guitar Notes

Tenori-on

The Tenori-on is an electronic musical instrument introduced in the middle of the 2000s, developed with the Japanese artist Toshio Iwai. Its surface is a grid of illuminated buttons, and the player places and moves marks along rows and columns to create patterns of notes and sounds that play as the light sweeps across the grid, so that the instrument can be performed by hand or left to run as a changing composition. It generates its own sounds and can send data to other equipment, and it is unusual among electronic instruments for being as much a visual object as a musical one.
