The Hitmaker
The Hitmaker is the Fender Stratocaster that Nile Rodgers of Chic has used on an extraordinary number of records. He acquired it in the 1970s, and it has a specification of the early 1960s with a three-colour sunburst finish and a rosewood fretboard, along with a distinctive arrangement of the volume and tone controls and a hardtail bridge in place of a vibrato. Its clear, percussive and even sound suited the precisely played funk rhythm parts for which he is known, and the instrument has been used across decades of production work in soul, pop and disco.
