Yamaha YM2154
The YM2154 is a sound chip from Yamaha's family of frequency modulation devices. Chips of this kind generate musical tones by combining simple waveforms so that they interact and produce complex harmonics, and different members of the family differ in the number of channels they can sound at once, in the number of operators they use to build each tone, and in the additional facilities such as percussion or sampled sound they include. The YM2154 belongs to the middle of that range of designs, and it was used in computers and other equipment of the period as a source of music and sound effects.
