Yamaha YM2151

The Yamaha YM2151 is a sound chip developed by Yamaha and widely used in arcade machines, computers and musical equipment of the 1980s. It generates eight channels of music by frequency modulation, and it is able to control the pitch of each channel independently and to produce a wide range of tones from bell-like and metallic sounds to imitations of conventional instruments, with stereo output on the supported systems. It was one of the principal music chips of the period, and its distinctive voice is familiar to anyone who played the arcade games and computers that used it.
