Yamaha YM2608

The Yamaha YM2608 is a sound chip from the company's family of frequency modulation devices, widely used in Japanese personal computers of the 1980s and 1990s. It provides several channels of music generated by frequency modulation and adds a channel for sampled or compressed audio, which allows percussion, speech and other recorded sounds to be played alongside the synthesised ones, and it can be programmed across a wide range of instrument and effect voices. Chips of this kind gave computers of the period musical capabilities that their standard hardware lacked, and they are remembered for the music written for them.
