Yamaha YM2610
The Yamaha YM2610 is a sound chip that combines frequency modulation synthesis with sampled audio, and it was used in a well known arcade and home system of the early 1990s. It provides several channels of synthesised music together with further channels of sampled sound, so that a game could combine melodic and harmonic parts with percussion, speech and recorded effects, and it supports the stereo output and the programming depth that arcade music of the period required. The chip's particular voice is familiar from the soundtracks of the systems that used it.
