Yamaha YMF278
The Yamaha YMF278 is a sound chip that combines two methods of generating music: frequency modulation synthesis, in which simple waveforms are combined to create complex tones, and wavetable playback, in which recorded samples are played back and processed. The combination allows both the bright, bell-like sounds of the synthesis family and more realistic imitations of acoustic instruments from the sample set, under the control of standard computer music instructions. Chips of this kind were fitted to sound cards and expansion boards for personal computers, giving those machines a standard musical capability for games and for composition software.
