Yamaha YMZ280B

The Yamaha YMZ280B is a sound chip that generates audio from recorded samples rather than by synthesis, playing back stored sounds under the control of the software running on the equipment that contains it. Devices of this kind were used in arcade machines and other electronic equipment where a large set of sound effects and musical passages had to be produced from memory, and they differ from the company's frequency modulation chips by reproducing recordings rather than building tones from waveforms. The chip belongs to the range of audio devices through which the company supplied sound to hardware of the period.
