Boss CS-2
The Boss CS-2 Compression Sustainer followed the original CS-1 in the early 1980s and stayed in the catalogue until the CS-3 took its place later in the decade. It is an analogue compressor built around the same idea as its predecessor: squeeze the peaks of the signal so quiet notes come up and loud ones are held back, then sustain them so chords and lines ring evenly. Players use it to tighten clean parts, to fatten a funk rhythm or to push an overdrive pedal harder. Boss later reissued the circuit in updated form, which says something about how well regarded it remains.
