Boss NF-1 Noise Gate

The Boss NF-1 Noise Gate is a compact noise gate from the late 1970s, part of the early generation of Boss pedals. It works by cutting the signal when its level falls below a threshold the player sets, which silences the hiss and hum that high gain setups produce between notes. A threshold control decides where the gate opens and closes, and the pedal also serves as a mute. Gates solve a very practical problem on loud stages, so despite its plain function the NF-1 found a place in rigs of the era, and Boss later replaced it with the NS-2 Noise Suppressor.
