Fender Jazz Bass Special
The Fender Jazz Bass Special was a model Fender offered in the mid 1980s, produced in Japan and designed for bassists who needed more tonal range than the standard instrument. It paired a split-coil Precision-style pickup at the middle with a single-coil Jazz pickup at the bridge, added an active preamp or a passive tone-control arrangement with a wide sweep depending on the version, and used a slimmer neck and updated hardware. Guitars and basses in this series were sold in several finishes and pickup combinations, and they are collected as examples of Fender's Japanese production of the period.
