Fender Precision Bass

The Fender Precision Bass is the instrument that established the electric bass guitar as it is known today, introduced in 1951 and named for its fretted, easily tuned precision compared with the double bass. Early versions had a single-coil pickup; from 1957 the design settled into the split-coil, hum-cancelling pickup in the middle position that gives the characteristic full, solid tone, together with an offset body and a wide, flat neck. It has been in continuous production since, and it remains one of the most recorded instruments in popular music.
