Gibson ES-335
The Gibson ES-335 is the semi-hollow electric guitar that defined the category, introduced in 1958. It has a thin, double-cutaway body with two hollow chambers separated by a solid maple centre block: the block holds the pickups and the bridge, which controls feedback and adds sustain, while the chambers give the instrument a lighter weight and an airy resonance. It carries two humbucking pickups with separate volume and tone controls, and its combination of hollow-body warmth with solid-body punch made it one of the most useful and most recorded electric guitars in existence.
