Roland Sound Canvas
The Roland Sound Canvas is the company's line of sound modules and sound cards built to a general standard of instrument assignment and control, so that the same piece of music would sound consistent whatever device it was played on. The modules generate their sounds from sampled or synthesised waveforms and respond to the full range of MIDI messages, and the name was used both for rack units and for expansion cards fitted inside computers, along with the software equivalents that followed. The line was central to computer music and game soundtracks through the 1990s, since it provided a common set of voices that software could rely on.
