Roland TR-909
The Roland TR-909 is a drum machine introduced in 1983, the successor to the company's analogue instruments of the period. It combines analogue generation of its drum voices with digital samples for the cymbals and hi-hats, an approach that gives it a punchy, aggressive and clearly defined sound, and it uses a step sequencer with a simple arrangement of controls for programming patterns. It became one of the foundations of house and techno music, where its kick and hi-hats are heard on a great many records, and it remains one of the most sought after drum machines.
