My Guitar Notes

Brownie

Brownie is the name usually attached to Eric Clapton's mid-1950s Fender Stratocaster, a guitar he used through the late 1960s and early 1970s, including on the recordings with Derek and the Dominos. He bought it second hand in London, and the nickname reflects its brown sunburst finish, in contrast to Blackie, the part-built Stratocaster that replaced it later. Brownie was eventually sold at auction, and in the decades since it has become one of the better documented guitars in popular music. This entry covers that particular instrument, not a production model.
