Watch
Southern Ukulele Store's walkthrough covers the Aquila line with playing, which is the clearest way to hear what Nylgut does next to the alternatives.
Why it matters
Aquila publishes a breaking-point index of 310 Hz per metre for Nylgut and describes its density and acoustic qualities as nearly identical to natural gut. Because so many ukuleles ship with it, it is the reference point the other sets here are heard against. The range covers all four sizes and both tunings, and single strings are sold, so a broken string does not mean a new set.
Note
Nylgut is a synthetic monofilament developed to behave like gut — density and acoustic behaviour close to gut, without gut's cost or its instability as humidity changes. Aquila patented it in 1997, and it is the material most new ukuleles are strung with.
