Kala's U-Bass: a short-scale bass strung with thick polyurethane strings that plays like a ukulele.

Why it matters
The U-Bass made the bass-ukulele category mainstream and is still the instrument other makers are measured against. The rubbery strings and short scale produce a double-bass-like thump that works well for acoustic gigs and recording, although the feel takes some adjustment. Kala's own range now runs from a few hundred dollars up to solid-body and five-string versions.
Note
Bass-scale ukulele with polyurethane strings. Sounds far larger than it looks and is the instrument that made this category mainstream.

Before you buy
- String type changes the sound and feel more than the body wood
- Amplification helps in anything but a quiet acoustic setting
- Fretless and fretted versions are separate models
