Why it matters
The Jaguar's short scale and dense switching were designed for 1960s studio and surf work, then rediscovered by alternative bands decades later. Fender's current production version keeps those features and lists at $879.99, which buys a layout that would once have been a specialist purchase. It behaves nothing like a Stratocaster: shorter scale, more switches, and a tone that players either take to immediately or spend a month adjusting to.
Note
Shorter 24" scale offset with lead/rhythm circuits, strangle switch and multiple pickup switches; a 90s-alt and surf staple.
Specifications
- Scale length: 610 mm (24 in)
- Neck shape: Modern "C"
Before you buy
- The 24-inch scale lowers string tension, so a heavier gauge may suit better than the usual set
- The switching layout takes time, and the rhythm circuit suits a clean, dark amp setting
- Check bridge height and tremolo balance on any example, new or used
