Why it matters
The Mustang began as a short-scale student guitar and now sits in the middle of Fender's Mexican-made range, above the Squier versions and below the American models. Its shorter scale and smaller body suit smaller hands, and the offset outline gives a different balance on a strap than a Stratocaster. Because it is current production, replacement parts and necks are straightforward to source.
Note
Student-model offset with dynamic vibrato; beloved by grunge/indie (Kurt Cobain) players.
Specifications
- Scale length: 610 mm (24 in)
- Neck shape: Modern "C"
Before you buy
- Short scale means lower string tension: play one before committing
- The offset vibrato rewards a careful setup
- Check whether a used listing is a Player II or an older Mustang
