Yamaha's SG series is the double-cutaway line built to take on the Les Paul, with the SG1820 as its current expression.

Why it matters
The top SG models used a through-neck and a brass sustain block instead of a set neck, which is what separated them from the copies of the day. The modern SG1820 keeps the shape but is distributed unevenly, so pricing has to be checked by region rather than read from one list. Used instruments from the Japanese market are a common way in.
Note
The SG2000 was built as a Les Paul alternative with a through-neck and brass block; the SG1820 continues the line.
