Why it matters
The Jazz Bass is the second half of the pair that defines what a bass guitar is expected to look and sound like, and it has stayed in production because the neck makes long sets easier. The current Player II version lists at $849.99 and keeps the narrow neck and two-pickup layout intact. Choosing between it and a Precision comes down mostly to neck width and whether the extra pickup blend is wanted.
Note
Slimmer-necked bass with two single coils; brighter, more growl than the Precision.
Specifications
- Scale length: 864 mm (34 in)
- Neck shape: Modern "C"
Before you buy
- The two-pickup blend and the narrower neck are the deciding factors against a Precision
- Soloing either pickup brings single-coil hum, while both together cancel it
- Check the setup on used examples, since truss rod adjustment is routine on long-scale basses
